The diving reflex: bradycardia during cold ocular irrigation.
R E P L Y I thank Drs. Mezon and Badner for their thoughts on the case, but I don't think diminished gas flow in the face o f increased minute volume explains the rapid hypercarbia. Firstly, within 15 min the PETCO 2 increased from 32 to 45 mmHg without alteration o f ventilation or fresh gas flow. Secondly, I have never seen a doubling o f PETCO 2 simply by increasing the minute volume without...
متن کاملBradycardia during cold ocular irrigation under general anaesthesia: an example of the diving reflex.
A case of bradycardia is reported which was precipitated by cold normal saline applied to the eye during general anaesthesia. The history and physiology of the diving reflex is discussed and we believe that these data suggest that this patient's bradycardia was induced by the diving reflex, and not by the oculocardiac reflex.
متن کاملReflex bradycardia during surgery.
Reflex bradycardia and sinus arrest may occur in a variety of surgical procedures, from neurosurgery to general abdominal, laparoscopic, ophthalmic and facial surgery and even procedures such as liver biopsies and electroconvulsive therapy. In most cases a vagally-mediated reflex has been implicated, although experimental support for this is often lacking. Drugs such as vecuronium, atracurium, ...
متن کاملThe prevention of reflex bradycardia during ophthalmic surgery.
This paper concerns the reflex effects on the heart of the application of traction to the extrinsic muscles of the eye. Relevant medical literature is reviewed, and a controlled investigation of the value of muscle relaxant drugs in the prevention of untoward vagal activity during eye surgery is described. Gallamine is shown to provide considerable protection by reason of its vagal-blocking act...
متن کاملDiving bradycardia of elderly Korean women divers, haenyeo, in cold seawater: a field report
The purpose of the present field study was to explore diving patterns and heart rate of elderly Korean women divers (haenyeo) while breath-hold diving in cold seawater. We hypothesized that the decreasing rate in heart rate of elderly haenyeos during breath-hold diving was greater and total diving time was shorter than those of young haenyeos from previous studies. Nine haenyeos participated in...
